The Atom Toronto Marlboros team won the Burlington Golden Horseshoe AAA Hockey Tournament on December 30th 2 to 1 over the host Burlington Eagles. The Marlboros went 4 and 0 during the round robin, scoring 16 goals while not allowing a single goal against.
In the quarterfinals, the Atom team faced a determined Hamilton Reps squad, but took it 2 to 1 to advance. In the semis, they faced the Whitby Wildcats. Whitby had been the first team the Atoms played this year, tying them at zero at the Marlboros International Friendship Tournament. This game served as a good measure of how far the team has come since then, as the Marlboros took the semi by a 2 to 0 score.
With Burlington defeating the Mississauga Reps in the other semi-final, the stage was set for an exciting championship. As is typical for a final in Burlington, Eagles fans greatly out numbered the Marlboros supporters. The Eagles team had won this championship at both the Tyke and Novice levels, so if the Marlboros were to win, they would have to continue the excellent team play that is their hallmark. Following individual player introductions, the teams got down to the game. The first period ended scoreless, with the play very equal throughout. The Marlboros scored first during the second period when they took advantage of a mistake by Burlington's otherwise highly effective defensemen. Later in the period, Burlington scored their only goal on a powerplay. This made the third period critical to both teams. The Marlboros came out strong and took the play to the Eagles. Their hard work was finally rewarded when they scored their second goal with about 4 minutes left in the game. Despite subsequently being assessed a penalty and despite the Eagles pulling their goalie, the Marlboros played excellent team defense and held off the Eagles onslaught, winning the game 2 to 1.
The Marlboros finished the tournament with a 7 and 0 record, with 22 goals for and just 2 against. This win was all about teamwork and desire - what this great group stands for all of the time. |
